Willard Irvin Haithcock, Jr. (1944–2021) was a long-time supporter, board member, and beloved presence at the Henderson Family YMCA. Born in Kinston, NC, he graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in business and dedicated much of his life to his family, faith, and community.

Willard met his wife Nancy while still in school, and their 55-year marriage was a testament to devotion. He cared deeply for his children, Julia and Heath, and never missed a game or event if he could help it. A proud grandfather, he traveled far and wide to support his granddaughter’s sports and competitions.

A man of simple pleasures, Willard loved fast cars, golf, and a good buffet. Despite his success, he never owned a cell phone or computer, and carried his gym clothes in the same worn duffle bag for years — politely declining offers for a new one.

He was also a hard worker, owning and operating Sunset Gardens Cemetery, where he remained hands-on into his 70s.

Willard believed in the YMCA's mission of serving all in the community. In his honor, his family established two annual scholarships at the Henderson Family YMCA to continue his legacy of service and friendship.
